Now that we’ve given you recipes for Homemade Coconut Marshmallows and Gluten-Free Graham Crackers, you didn’t think we would leave out how to make s’mores in the oven did you? After all, it doesn’t get much more kid-friendly, especially with no fire involved! Even better, this recipe is naturally gluten-free and keeps things allergy-friendly with vegan and dairy-free options so everyone can enjoy!

If you’re looking for more dairy-free desserts, be sure to take a look at this Chickpea Cookie Dough Dessert Hummus, these Best Ever Chocolate Chip Vegan Cookies, and everyone’s favorite Dirt Pie made gluten and dairy-free. Following along with this month’s theme, these recipes are all super kid-friendly and, like s’mores, just a little messy. That means they’ve got to taste incredible!

Before you start digging into those recipes, though, we’ve got oven s’mores to make!

How to Make S’mores in the Oven & Why You Need To

Don’t get me wrong. I love a traditional campfire s’more. However, fires aren’t always safe for kids, and unfortunately, the weather isn’t always permitting to strike up a good flame. So, what’s the next best option when a craving hits? Oven-baked s’mores! Luckily, this recipe is a breeze and comes together in just 4 easy steps so you can get back to snacking.

First, place 8 Gluten-Free Graham Crackers on a baking sheet. Then, add 1 square of dark chocolate on top of each cracker, and follow it with one homemade marshmallow.

Next, set the oven to a temperature between 475-500 degrees Fahrenheit, and set the baking sheet on the top rack for 1-2 minutes or until the chocolate has melted and the marshmallows form a golden crust. If you’re using vegan marshmallows, allow for a couple of extra minutes, but watch them carefully!

To finish, remove the baking sheet from the oven (using oven mitts of course!), place 1 graham cracker on top of each marshmallow, and enjoy!

For crispier graham crackers, roll slightly thinner. Thinner graham crackers will bake faster so they need to be watched the oven in case they brown faster. Use these homemade graham crackers rolled at least 1/8th in thick.

Easy Ingredient Alternatives

While these oven-baked s’mores are gluten-free, they do contain dairy and other animal products. Luckily, there are easy swaps to make them suitable for every diet.

For example, to make this recipe dairy-free, simply swap out any butter used for a vegan alternative. Or, to make these s’mores in the oven totally vegan, opt for vegan marshmallows such as Dandies. Most high-quality dark chocolates are made without animal products. However, be sure to double-check the ingredient list. My personal favorite are the Enjoy Life Foods Chocolate Bars.

Alternative Indoor Cooking Methods

If you don’t have an oven or don’t want to bother heating it up and adding more heat to your home in the hot summer months, don’t worry! You can still make these gluten-free s’mores using a toaster oven, skillet, or microwave.

When using the toaster oven, the process stays pretty similar to the original oven-baking method. Instead of heating up an oven, all you need to do is set the toaster oven to broil, place your s’mores on a small baking sheet, and let them toast for 2-3 minutes.

Alternatively, if you have a gas stove, you can imitate the feeling of roasting marshmallows around a fire by roasting them above a burner. Just be careful not to get your marshmallows too hot as they could catch fire! Then, once your marshmallows have reached your desired crispness, assemble your s’mores and enjoy!

Last but not least, if you want a super quick and simple way to satisfy a craving, you can always just pop your s’mores in the microwave for about 15 seconds. This will melt the chocolate and marshmallow to create the sticky texture we all know and love, but you will not achieve any of the roasted quality achieved with an oven or stovetop method.

S’mores Variations & Flavors

Of course, these S’mores in the oven are delicious all on their own. However, if you want to get a little creative, feel free to experiment with a variety of flavors, add-ins, and toppings! Really, there’s no way you can go wrong.

To start, try replacing the chocolate. You could use a dairy free milk chocolate (we use Enjoy Life Foods), sea salt or hazelnut dark chocolate for a more decadent s’more. Of course, white chocolate is always an option, but it’s not dairy free. You could also add in fresh fruit like strawberries or bananas.

Alternatively, you could swap out the graham crackers for different flavors such as cinnamon or chocolate varieties. Or, if you’re feeling really fancy, you could dip, dunk, or drizzle your favorite sauce. I like to use Vegan Dulce De Leche Sauce, but chocolate syrup, strawberry syrup, or this vegan salted caramel sauce work just as well.

Make as many or as few substitutions as you want, and play around with different flavor combinations to find your perfect s’more! The flavor possibilities are endless!

Why You Should Be Eating Dark Chocolate

For this recipe, we used dark chocolate for a variety of reasons. Not only is the slightly bitter flavor the perfect pairing with the sweetness of our Coconut Marshmallows. It is also extremely good for you, too! Did you know that dark chocolate has a variety of positive health benefits?

For example, organic dark chocolate (cocoa percentage of 70% or higher) is a great source of iron, magnesium, and copper. It is also full of immune-boosting antioxidants, can help lower blood pressure, improve cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of heart disease, improve brain function, and more.

Basically, more cocoa equals more flavonoids (antioxidants), yea!

So, go ahead and enjoy that extra piece, it’s good for you!  Note – Be sure to check the ingredient labels too! Dutch-Cocoa is more processed. Aim for real cocoa in the ingredient list. Like this one (affiliate link).

If you make these oven-baked s’mores, I would love to know what ingredient add-ins or alternatives you included and whether you like your marshmallows super golden and crispy or on the gooier side. No matter how you make them, I hope you enjoy them!

Description

Dark Chocolate Oven-Baked S’mores are made in the oven with homemade marshmallows and gluten-free graham crackers for an allergy-friendly dessert that can be made all year long! Perfect for parties, bad weather, and more.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Preheat the broiler in your oven.
  • Place 8 gluten-free graham crackers on a baking sheet followed by 1 square of dark chocolate and topped by a homemade marshmallow.
  • Broil at 475 – 500F on the bottom rack for 1-2 minutes until golden and chocolate is melted.
  • Remove and place another graham cracker on top before serving.

Notes

Vegan marshmallows take longer to melt, closer to 2 minutes under the broiler. So be careful/watchful that the graham crackers don’t burn.

My homemade paleo marshmallows melt quite fast. Add the marshmallows last minute (or so) left of broiling. Regular store-bought marshmallows take 90 seconds to 2 minutes.

If you are using thinner homemade graham crackers, be sure to watch the oven as they bake/brown much faster! I recommend using graham crackers at least 1/8th inch thick for oven-baked s’more.
